Lessons to be learned

We are in the midst of a global pandemic of the kind likely none of us expected. There will be much work done to see how this all started, how did it get so out of hand and what we can do to keep this from happening again.

We are in the midst of a global pandemic of the kind likely none of us expected. There will be much work done to see how this all started, how did it get so out of hand and what we can do to keep this from happening again. What we also must do is to reflect on some important lessons COVID-19 has to teach.

Many people would like to think they can or should be able to define who and what they are and determine their own lives. However, COVID-19 shows that nature can determine our lives. Just one virus had the capacity of turning the world upside down. We are not as powerful as we like to think we are.

We thought, with all our science and medical knowledge, we could have prevented this pandemic. Unfortunately, human pride, anxiety, disbelief and an unwillingness to act in a prudent manner got in the way of what could and should have been done. Our own imperfections can hinder or even prevent what needs to be done. We are not as wise as we like to think we are.

What can we do? On Pentecost, St, Peter called on us to repent. We first must admit our imperfections and sinfulness and turn to Christ in repentance and faith. We must trust in Jesus to get us through these times and draw on His help, not just our own strength. We must acknowledge that we need each other in community and gather at the church as soon as we can come together in worship. Trust in Jesus, pray and obey His commandments. There is no other way.
