Column: What are you reading?

The last two years have provided the opportunity for more reading time, and I have surrounded myself with books.
love of reading
Books can be found on my coffee table, my bedside table, in my purses.

WEYBURN - A friend recently commented that he could tell I was my Mother’s child because I had books in my car.

If you knew my Mom, you know that she surrounded herself with reading material, and usually had five or six books on the go at one time.

I’ve always been an avid reader, however the last two years have provided the opportunity for more reading time, and I have surrounded myself with books.

They are on my coffee table, my bedside table, in my purses, and thanks to the Kindle and Audible apps, they are also on my phone.

I’m currently reading Dr. Gary Hoium’s book “Don’t They Kick When You Do That.” Dr. Hoium provides a humorous look at the life of a veterinarian in our very own community. This is a great read and I highly recommend it.

My friend, Jennifer Wallace, recently released her book “Miss G and Me”, which is a series of poems, essays and memories of her Jamaican-born Mother’s immigration to Canada, via England. Following her training and work as a nurse and midwife in England, she landed her first position in Canada in Weyburn. This book was a true joy to read, and the main character is also a beloved family friend.

Another book I am currently reading is “A Lantern in Her Hand.” I have read this book a few times over the years and now it is on my Kindle app. It has a very special place in my heart. Vern Vogel, who passed away shortly before Christmas, read this to our Grade 5 class at Elgin School. Vern was one of my favourite teachers, and he read with such passion, he made the stories come alive. This book will always be a favourite. Thank you, Mr. Vogel.

The audio book currently being played on my phone is “Run Rose Run” by Dolly Parton and James Patterson. It’s not my normal read, however there is an online book club that I have joined and it is the book that is being discussed. It has been surprisingly good, however I think that the fact that Dolly Parton voices one of the characters makes it all the better.

I encourage you to read. If you already read, try reading something outside of your usual genres. Listen to an audio book while you walk. Read to your babies and to those who can no longer read.
