Weyburn Canoe and Kayak Club needs help to stay running

Volunteers for the board are needed for the canoe-kayak club to remain running.

WEYBURN – The Weyburn and District Canoe and Kayak Club (WCKC) is a non-profit, volunteer-run club based out of Nickle Lake Regional Park, and is in need of volunteers to help out on the board to stay afloat.

The club has offered summer programs over the years from rentals to summer camps, group paddles, and competitive athlete paddling programs including teams for the Saskatchewan Summer Games.

The club members are very proud of their small club for offering so many opportunities to get active and to enjoy paddling regardless of age or ability.

“We are reaching out to the community as we need your help. This kayak club has been running strong for many years by a board of directors of only three people. The kayak club is financially healthy, and we have an amazing location. If we are to continue, we need people to join our Board,” said board member Caroline Gillies in a message.

“You don’t need to know how to paddle or be a strong swimmer. We need ideas, and people who want to get involved to help keep this club going. We have many board positions available, and we work as a team to get things done for the good of the club and its members,” she added.

Last summer the club hired seven employees, including three full time, and four part-time, and offered summer camp fun to approximately 85 children in the community.

“We had over 175 club members getting in boats and enjoying a paddle. We also had many community groups renting boats for fun on the water,” said Gillies.

Without new board members the club can’t continue to run programs or rentals.

Please call or text Caroline Gillies at 306-861-1636, or email [email protected] to find out how you can get involved to keep the WCKC going strong.
