Western Development Museums will stay closed for the interim

The Government of Saskatchewan announced museums can begin opening on June 29 as part of Phase 4.2 in the government’s Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan.

The Government of Saskatchewan announced museums can begin opening on June 29 as part of Phase 4.2 in the government’s Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan.

But after reviewing their concerns regarding the ongoing spread of the coronavirus, the Western Development Museum (WDM) made the assessment to stay closed at their locations in Moose Jaw, North Battleford, Saskatoon and Yorkton in an announcement made on June 24.

Joan Kanigan, WDM CEO said, "The safety of our visitors, volunteers and staff is our primary concern. As difficult as this is, the WDM must remain closed until we are confident that all the requirements outlined in the Libraries, Museums, Art Galleries Guidelines, along with all other applicable provincial regulations, are being met to the highest standard."

The WDM said they are looking ahead to a time when they can welcome patrons back to their museum locations when all the respective safety protocols are firmly established.

The Western Development Museum has four exhibit locations in Saskatchewan. The WDM is the province's largest human history museum with a directive to accumulate, conserve and display articles of historical significance and magnitude in connection with Western Canada’s development in the modern era.

More information about when the WDM will re-open can be found on their website as additional facts about health and safety in relation to the presence of COVID-19 in the province are presented.
