Staying at home, social distancing and frequent handwashing remain important steps in the prevention of COVID-19. Masks are not meant to replace these strategies. Cloth masks will not fully protect the users from COVID-19. However, it has been suggested that for those times people must go out in public, these masks may help to slow the spread of the virus.

The Assiniboia Masketeers are making and distributing masks in two stages: first to local citizens over 65, along with those in high risk groups. The second wave of masks will be produced for the general public.

The masks are adult-sized. The masks are not recommended for people with severe respiratory problems, because this protective wear might impede their breathing. These masks are also unsuitable for young children and babies due to the risk of suffocation.

The masks made by the Assiniboia Masketeers are free of charge and created from donated materials. Any donations of 100 per cent cotton, thin elastic, thread or non woven Pellon interfacing materials are welcomed. Ìý

Ordered masks will be washed and placed in Ziplock bags then left outside homes during deliveries to observe social distancing. The volunteers are willing to supply masks to people living in town or rural locations. Please request one mask per person until all orders have been fulfilled.

To receive a mask, call or text Andrea Elson-Smith at 306-640-7990.Ìý
