MOOSOMIN — Last month was a time to remember one of Canada’s heroes: Terry Fox. Each year, a special fundraising run in his honour is held for cancer research through the Terry Fox Foundation, officially set this year on Sept. 15, although donations continue to pour in year-round.

Several events were also held in and around Moosomin throughout September, raising a combined total of $9,673 for the cause.

MacLeod Elementary School had their Terry Fox event on Sept. 13, raising $600 for the cause.

The Rocanville Wellness 10 class hosted a Terry Fox event at Rocanville School on Sept. 19, surpassing last year’s total by raising $1,250. The town also hosted a walk/run on Sept. 15 at the cross-country ski trials, bringing in $1,090.

Esterhazy High School was first in the region to hold a Terry Fox event, raising $315.

Maryfield School and Wawota Parkland School both held their fundraisers on Sept. 27, but final numbers were not available yet.

Whitewood School also held their Terry Fox Walk and back to school barbecue on Sept. 27, raising $6,418.

Money raised locally has a big impact. The Terry Fox Foundation has three main programs — the TFRI Research Grants Program, the Marathon of Hope Cancer Centres Network and the Digital Health and Discovery Platform. Combined, these three programs invested $43.9 million through the 2023/24 fiscal year ($19.1 million to the TFRI Research Grants Program through 49 projects, $24.6 million to the Marathon of Hope Cancer Centres Network through 127 projects, and $200,000 through the Digital Health and Discovery Platform).

Last year, more than $9.6 million was raised through the Terry Fox Run and over $14.2 million through the Terry Fox School Run. In total, 578 communities across Canada participated in 2023 through 3,980 teams and 9,233 schools. More than $1 million was raised internationally last year through 190 events in 33 countries.
