The Saskatchewan RCMP’s Roving Traffic Unit stopped an eastbound vehicle on Highway One, as the driver advanced to Swift Current on Thursday, May 14 at 11:30 a.m.

The RCMP were checking to see if the driver possessed a valid licence.

During the stop, the driver gave the RCMP a Saskatchewan photo identification card, but said he didn’t have an operator’s licence.

A check of the motorist’s licence through SGI records indicated the licence expired in 2005.

During the investigation, the officer developed rational grounds to believe the driver had consumed alcohol.

The driver underwent screening with a breathalyzer. He failed the reading and was consequently arrested for impaired driving – the 55-year-old motorist from Regina provided breath samples of 1.5 times over the legal limit.

Moreover, the male driver’s eight-year-old grandchild was a passenger in the vehicle.

The driver was charged with impaired operation of a conveyance, operating a conveyance over 80 mg per cent of alcohol, driving without a valid driver’s licence and consuming alcoholic beverages in a motorized vehicle.

The motorist is set to appear in the Swift Current Provincial Court in September.

The child was taken to the Swift Current Municipal RCMP Detachment by members of the Saskatchewan Highway Patrol, remaining there until the child’s mother arrived a few hours later.

The driver’s name wasn’t released to protect the child’s identity.
