Construction now under way at airport on $26 million dollar airfield renewal.

Despite the runway construction things should be normal for travellers at Regina International Airport’s terminal building this summer.

REGINA - The main runway at Regina International Airport is out of commission as the airport undergoes a massive rehabilitation project.

Regina Airport Authority had announced construction is under way for its $26 million dollar airfield revitalization project, which is scheduled to last through the third week of September.

The main runway will remain closed during the rehabilitation project as it undergoes upgrades. Flights will now use the secondary runway and schedules with airline partners have been adjusted to ensure service continues as per usual at the airport.

According to the airport's news release, in addition to the pavement rehabilitation on the main runway and a taxiway, there will also be drainage improvements, replacement of runway edge lighting and associated electrical infrastructure, the installation of a SALSAR approach lighting system and two runway end safety areas.

The main impact the public may notice is heavier aircraft traffic in some areas of the city as opposed to others, due to takeoffs and landings being limited to a single runway.

“This is an important capital project for YQR and we’re happy to have it underway after pandemic- related delays. This type of work happens every 10 to 15 years and will ensure both the ongoing safety of our main runway as well as a smoother experience for pilots and travellers”, said Justin Reves, Director, Revenue Development, Public Relations, and Customer Experience, in a statement.

The rehabilitation is partially funded through the Government of Canada’s Airport Critical Infrastructure Program with the remainder funded by Regina Airport Authority.
