Missing youths across Saskatchewan is worrying during the COVID-19 pandemic

The Battlefords RCMP requested the public鈥檚 assistance in locating 14-year-old Kalayah Ruth Jackson of North Battleford on Monday, May 18. The RCMP were also searching for another teen 鈥 a 13-year-old male named Josaiha Checkosis, also of North Battleford.

Jackson was last seen on April 29, as she ran away from an Eagle鈥檚 Nest Youth Ranch group home in North Battleford. Described as 5鈥6鈥 tall and 120 lbs, with medium dark brown hair and brown eyes, observers noted she鈥檇 been last seen wearing a dark shirt and black shorts.

Anyone with information on Jackson鈥檚 or Checkosis鈥 whereabouts were asked to call the Battlefords RCMP or Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers.

Eagles Nest Youth Ranch is a non-profit serving vulnerable youth in the province with group homes in Christopher Lake, Prince Albert and North Battleford.

When the worldwide pandemic was first announced on March 11 by WHO director-general Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, several teens had gone missing or remained missing in the province. Many of the teens, such as Jackson and Checkosis, were Indigenous.

The Regina Police Service asked the public to help locate 12-year-old Faith Kaiswatum on May 18. She was last seen in the 700 block of Athol Street at approximately 5:30 p.m. about three months ago on February 23.

The 5鈥4鈥 tall, 120-pound teen with black shoulder length hair, brown eyes and a medium build wore ripped blue jeans, black Nikes and a black hoodie with rainbow lettering the day she disappeared weeks before the pandemic鈥檚 declaration.

The fate of many teens in Saskatchewan during an international catastrophe caused by a viral epidemic is alarming. Fifteen-year-old Zelda Bill of Shellbrook and Mont Nebo, absent since March 10. Fifteen-year-old Shandaya Akachuk of Fort Qu'Appelle and Regina, listed AWOL on February 13. Twelve-year-old Paris Corrigal of Saskatoon, missing since February 8. 聽聽聽聽

There were 27 active missing persons on Saskatchewan鈥檚 official missing persons database as of May 18. The list, which is not conclusive of all Saskatchewan鈥檚 missing persons, nevertheless included a number of people of all ages with 10 preteens and teens represented.

Some of these children have been missing for more than two years, such as Mekayla Bali of Yorkton, who vanished on April 12, 2016.
