SCA and Saskatchewan’s provincial government are working together on a COVID-19 response

The Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association (SCA) contributed up to $1 million to partner with the Government of Saskatchewan in offsetting the COVID-19 impacts on the Western Livestock Price Insurance Program (WLPIP) premiums.

The Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association (SCA) contributed up to $1 million to partner with the Government of Saskatchewan in offsetting the COVID-19 impacts on the Western Livestock Price Insurance Program (WLPIP) premiums.

On May 14, Minister David Marit announced the Government of Saskatchewan would offset the increase in premiums with $5 million of provincial funds.

This statement from the government followed advocacy at the provincial and national levels and a commitment from the SCA board to fund an initiative to help deal with COVID-19 impacts on WLPIP premiums.

Work to bring the federal government to the table to cover the rest of the premium increase continued. Federal participation hasn’t happened yet, but SCA’s commitment remains. The details on the commitment from the SCA and the provinicial government are finalized.

SCA’s contribution is up to $1 million to match the province’s $5 million – these figures will offset an additional eight per cent of the COVID-19 impact on premium.

“Producers are facing uncertainty like never before. That uncertainty is part of why WLPIP premiums skyrocketed. SCA is glad to partner with the government of Saskatchewan in reducing the COVID-19 impact on livestock price insurance premiums. Producers that need to manage their risk by putting a floor under their expected prices are well-served by WLPIP,” said Arnold Balicki, SCA Chair.

“We value our close relationship with Saskatchewan livestock industry organizations and will continue to collaborate with producers to provide them with the supports they require,” said Saskatchewan’s Minister of Agriculture, David Marit. “This close collaboration helps to ensure that we are able to react to the needs and requests of the agriculture industry.”

Cow-calf producers are entering the final week to purchase calf price insurance through WLPIP, following the deadline extension from May 28 to June 18.

Premium tables are published on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Additional information on the Saskatchewan WLPIP Premium rebate can be found on the Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation (SCIC) website at: .
