Being involved with 4-H is a fun way to learn more about the cattle industry while building leadership skills, says Sydney Ross, a junior member of the Outram-Madigan 4-H Club.

Sydney joined 4-H because her parents, who are active with 4-H, said it would be a good way to earn money for college, while learning how to take care of a steer. It would also give her a chance to be part of a club and make some new friends.

“Lots of our neighbours are in our 4-H club and our family as well,” said Sydney.

Sydney has been able to attend the Rotary Regional 4-H Show and Sale in Estevan each year and sell a steer. The event has taught her showmanship skills, and has helped her learn to groom her steers and trim the steers’ toes.

At the sale in 2019, she had the reserve grand champion steer.

“Show days are really fun. You get to camp out at the fairgrounds, and it’s really fun because you get to hang out with your friends, and we play football and we have water fights,” Sydney said.

She has also participated in 4-H speaking competitions, which have helped her feel more comfortable in front of a crowd, and she has been the club reporter, enabling her to learn to take notes from a meeting.

Sydney would recommend 4-H to other people because it’s a fun way for people to show steers and to learn to be a leader.
