Education Minister Dustin Duncan announced regulatory changes on Aug. 11 which will mean more oversight of Qualified Independent Schools.

REGINA — The provincial government has announced they have contracted three administrators to oversee operations of Legacy Christian Academy and Grace Christian School in Saskatoon and Regent Christian Academy in Prince Albert.

The administrators are Mike Walter at Legacy Christian Academy, Dave Derksen at Grace Christian School and Randy Fox at Regent Christian Academy. According to the government’s news release each is a highly respected former superintendent or division director.

They start Aug. 24. According to the province, their priorities will be to direct the operations of the schools to ensure student safety and well-being, and provide a positive learning environment for students. That includes reviewing staff lists, school policies and procedures and historical documentation. They are also to provide formal monthly reports to the Ministry of Education to ensure the schools are teaching Saskatchewan curricula.

The plan is for the administrators to be in place for the next several months, or as required, according to the province.

The administrators are being taken on in response to the abuse scandal at Legacy Christian Academy in Saskatoon, formerly Christian Centre. About 40 former students have come forward in a class action lawsuit alleging abuse at the school including paddling, exorcism and other activity.

On Aug. 11, Education Minister Dustin Duncan announced administrators would be appointed for the three schools, as well as changes to the provincial regulations to provide greater oversight.
