Trio of girls' volleyball teams compete at SHSAA provincials

Wilkie, Unity and Macklin high school girl's volleyball teams competed at SHSAA provincials Nov. 19-20

UNITY - Macklin, Unity and Wilkie girls’ volleyball teams that successfully won their way through conference and regional playdowns to earn a provincial berth, wrapped up their seasons at SHSAA provincials Nov. 19-20.

Macklin girls joined the Wilkie women at Naicam for the 2A senior girls’ provincial championships. Both teams had a tough first day losing two of their first three games. A Macklin loss in three sets to Naicam and a Wilkie loss to Davidson in three sets in the playoff bracket ended the teams’ opportunities to advance to the provincial finals.

As of publication time, the Press-Herald was still waiting on the Macklin team for comment and photo.

“The McLurg Broncs … consisted of eight Grade 12s, two Grade 11s and three Grade 10s,” said coach Lesley Sittler. Abbey Sittler also coached the team.

After a 2-and-2 round robin, the team was placed third in their pool and faced off against Davidson.

“We battled hard taking the first set but came up short in the final two, thus ending our season.\

“The Broncs would like to thank all the families for the support through the season and we wish our Broncs boys good luck next weekend in their provincial quest," Lesley said.

Unity girls were off to Shellbrook for their opportunity to win a 3A girls’ provincial championship. The lady Warriors also experienced losses on opening day putting them in must-win games for day two of the event. The opening game in the playoff bracket had Unity facing off against Kipling, and even though the team played one of their best games of the provincial tournament, they were unable to win a spot in provincial finals.

This was the last UCHS volleyball season for Devyn McLean, Megan Brown and Alexis Elder, who are graduating.

“We set a goal at the beginning of the year to get to provincials," coach Vicki Orobko says.

"We exceeded that by getting a playoff game, and what a game it was. The girls played their best volleyball of the year forcing a third set against the eventual silver medalist, Kipling.

"We began our season with only one player who had played senior volleyball before. All season long every player contributed either as a starter or relief, in every match, right to the very last point. They have so much to be proud of as individuals and as a team. I still can't stop smiling.”
