Luseland Mayor thankful for community activity and camaraderie

Back to back weekend activity in September in Luseland

Aug. 26, I had the opportunity to take part in a facility tour of the Kerrobert Integrated Health Centre with other municipal leaders, Remote Health Minister Everett Hindley, MLA Ken Francis and KLD board chair Brad Murphy. Afterwards we had a round table discussion with Hindley and were able to bring forth concerns and issues facing rural hospitals and health care facilities. Some of the issues discussed were doctor recruitment and retention, ambulance services, the helipad and long-term care homes such as the Pioneer Haven. It was a great meeting and Hindley was responsive and open to discussion on an array of concerns brought forth.

The Luseland Community Development Committee will held the Luseland Harvest Festival Sept. 10 with many local organizations and businesses taking part in the day’s events. The museum held an agricultural fair, with judging done at the museum, Delta Co-op hosted outdoor games, the Luseland Daycare held a kids’ carnival at the Luseland/Salvador Homecoming Hall and a roast beef supper was put on by the Luseland Community Development Committee with proceeds going towards the hall. Some of the other businesses that took part included the Royal George Hotel holding a harvest buffet, the Luseland Theatre holding a movie for the kids, live entertainment at the Ranger Electric shop in the evening, rock painting at the Luseland Library, a harvest barbecue and glow golf at Bell Acres Golf and Country Club, bingo at the Pioneer Club, Smurf train, kids’ tractor pulls and much more.

The Town of Luseland will co-sponsor and hold the Flahrs with Flair Luseland MS Bike Ride Sept. 17. Opening ceremonies are at 8:45 a.m. with a kickoff speech by Mayor Kathy Wurz and Luseland Credit Union manager Adam Franko. The bike ride will commence at 9 a.m. and be followed by a barbecue as bikers cross the finish line. Instead of charging for lunch, the Luseland Credit Union will be accepting donations for the MS Society of Canada. MS barbecue sponsors include Delta Co-op, Luseland Family Foods and Luseland Credit Union. Please visit the Flahrs with Flair Gear Up to end MS Facebook page and find out how you can participate in the ride.

The Luseland Swimming Pool had a successful pool season, which ended Sept. 5. The pool committee would like to thank its lifeguard team for a fantastic season at the swimming pool. These guards spent many long days in some extreme heat waves and ensured safety and order at the pool. Thank you to pool manager Belle Dewald, assistant manager Hannah Wurz, Addison Eurich, Olivia Gardeski, Jonah Hansen, Fox Bazylinski and April Bartsch.

I had the opportunity to attend the opening school assembly Sept.1. The school is trying to focus on community involvement and engagement. I was delighted to attend and deliver a speech to the students and greetings from the town of Luseland. Also giving greetings was SCC board member Deb Scholer and Police Chief Nate Ekstrand also attended the assembly. We would like to wish all the students a successful year ahead. At our upcoming council meeting we will discuss the possibility of having a student representative join our council table. This could be an amazing opportunity to gain insight and perspective on issues facing younger generations and a chance for them to learn the challenges facing municipal councils and how governance works at the local level.

The town of Luseland would like to wish all our farming community a successful and safe harvest season. We are incredibly lucky to have the support and help of a very wide surrounding area who all consider Luseland “home.”
