KidSport Unity says 2021 was an amazing year for the program

KidSport Unity was the beneficiary of more than $6,000 in donations to help keep kids playing

UNITY — Unity Parks and Recreation Director Nicole Headrick and KidSport Unity committee member says 2021 was an amazing year for the group.

“We had 24 local kids who were sponsored in multiple sports in our community, totaling $6,786.90.”

Headrick says their group is entirely funded by donations and fundraising and, with the two-year pandemic putting a pause on fundraising efforts, the committee was extremely grateful for donations that helped keep kids playing.

A partnership with Nutrien Ag Solutions and Hollyhock’s Greenhouses helped raise $3,000 from the sale of lawn fertilizer.

Secure Energy also donated $1,000 to the group.

“We cannot thank the community enough for all they do and continue to do for our KidSport program,” says Headrick. “We also received donations from Unity Donor’s Choice, Unity Ag Society, UCHS 2021 Graduating Class as well as a couple of individual donations.”

It was hoped the organization could put on a Glow Skate celebration on Family Day but with COVID-19 all around, KidSport committee instead ran a “Celebrate Families, Celebrate Kids" campaign. Credential Financial Strategies donated $1,000 to swim passes. Delta Co-op, Unity, donated treats for kids, along with donations from Unity KidSport and their committee.

“It was nice to be able to give back to the kids and see the pure joy in their faces. We are blessed to be part of such an amazing community. We are very thankful for everyone who continues to support this program, which in turn, supports children in our community,” adds Headrick.

Together with the KidSport Saskatchewan network of local chapters, grants are provided to help cover the costs of enrolment so all kids aged 5-18 years in Saskatchewan can play a season of sport.

On the Saskatchewan KidSport home page, one parent’s testimonial states that this program afforded her kids opportunities that otherwise would not have been an option.

Donations can be made online at and selecting the community you want to donate to. Or you can drop off your donation at the town office to Nicole Headrick, KidSport Unity committee member or Arlene Southgate, at Red Apple, who is also a KidSport Unity committee member.
