A great backup plan, standby generator arrives at Unity's Luther Place

An invaluable piece of equipment to provide power to Unity's Luther Place in event of power failure arrived on Sept. 6

UNITY -- Inquiries into the cost of a backup generator at the senior living facility known as Luther Place in Unity began in 2012. The purchase of the generator was made in 2021 and delivery was received Sept. 6.

A spokesperson for Luther Place says the funding for the new standby generator has come from the Lutheran Church of Canada, Ternan Farms and local individuals and residents. The group says they will welcome donations towards this purchase.

Talking to Parkview Place, Unity senior assisted living facility, who installed a backup generator in 2019, they say there is great reassurance for staff and residents with this equipment in place.

Since installation of the generator at Parkview Place, manager Paula Sittler says, “We probably have used it at least six times a year whether a power outage has been half an hour or multiple hours.”

In locations that house community seniors, a backup generator can mean the difference between a resident getting their daily oxygen or going without for hours or at times, even longer. There are a number of other instances that the generator proves its worth in event of power failure.

Luther Place is a 46-unit, life-lease complex.

The generator to be installed at Luther Place arrived from Saskatoon Sept. 6 and will be installed on the west side of the building next to the air conditioning units.

Preparation for the installation began Aug. 23 when local contractors were employed to lay down the concrete pad and underground gas line as well as unload and put the generator in place upon its arrival.

The generator was purchased from DSG Power Systems in Saskatoon and will be professionally installed by All-Brite Electric of Saskatoon.

Luther Place residents will be assured that in event of a power outage, all common areas of Luther Place will have power, plus heating will remain available to all suites.
