Humboldt Broncos assistant coach Toneff to become head coach for Merritt Centennials

Humboldt Broncos assistant coach Curtis Toneff will become the head coach of the British Columbia Hockey League's Merritt Centennial starting Dec. 29.

HUMBOLDT — One of the Humboldt Broncos' assistant coaches is moving on to a head coach role.

Curtis Toneff has been hired by the British Columbia Hockey League's Merritt Centennials. He the head coach and general manager role on Dec. 29.

"“There is an incredible opportunity for me to help the Merritt Centennials get steered back in the right direction as a franchise, and it was one I couldn’t turn down," Toneff said in a . "I’m excited and humbled at the chance given to me by the organization."

Toneff joined the Broncos prior to the 2019-20 season. Earlier this month, the team announced he had .

“Curtis has been instrumental in the development of our players and his hard working approach will lead him to nothing but success in Merritt, said Scott Barney, the Broncos' head coach. “We would like to thank Curtis for his 2.5 years in Humboldt and are excited to see him get the opportunity he has worked very hard for and wish him nothing but success.”

A search for Toneff's replacement will be done in the coming weeks, the Broncos said.

"I will now be cheering on the Broncos from afar in their quest for a championship. I believe in every one of those players and can’t wait to see what they accomplish," Toneff said.

“Working alongside Scott and the Broncos staff everyday was amazing and always full of laughs and positivity behind the scenes. Humboldt has done an amazing job making the team such a desirable place to play and coach and I will miss it a lot.”
