RCMP arrest suspect involved in fatal hit and run of toddler

Mervin Poorman is approximately 6-foot-3Β and 300 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes. He has a number of tattoos on his arms, including the name β€œPoorman” on his left forearm and one described as the β€œBrowning” logo on his right hand.

PUNNICHY - Update:  Mervin Poorman was located and arrested by police yesterday evening, June 23, at a residence in Cold Lake, Alta.

Officers would like to thank the public for providing information which assisted with the investigation.

Original story: A one-year-old boy was killed in a hit and run and police are asking the public’s help locating the suspect, 33-year-old Mervin Poorman from Kawacatoose First Nation, and pick-up truck.

On June 22, at approximately 5:50 p.m., Punnichy RCMP received a report of a collision involving a small child on George Gordon First Nation.

Their investigation determined a pick-up truck struck a child, then fled. The child was declared deceased by EMS at the scene.

Now that next of kin have been notified, and police can confirm the victim has been identified as a one-year-old male from George Gordon First Nation. Their thoughts are with his family at this tragic time. Victim services have been made available to them.

Punnichy RCMP and neighbouring detachments have been looking for the suspect and pick-up truck since and following up on information received. Saskatchewan RCMP’s Regina General Investigation Section and Forensic Identification Services are also assisting with the investigation.

On June 23, Punnichy RCMP charged 33-year-old Mervin Poorman from Kawacatoose First Nation with one count, failure to stop after an accident resulting in death, and operation of a vehicle while prohibited.

A warrant has been issued for his arrest and Punnichy RCMP are actively working to locate him.

The pick-up truck, a black 2008 Dodge Ram with Saskatchewan license plate 274 MNW, has not been located and police continue to search for it.
